Our Mission

The Mission of the Preschool is to provide a safe, nurturing, and healthy learning environment where all children are exposed to stimulating, enriching, developmentally appropriate experiences. We respect the dignity, worth, and individuality of each child. We are an inclusive program and believe that inclusion builds a lifelong foundation for respecting human differences. We believe in the education of the whole child and plan activities to support the development of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills. Through active participation, children will develop self-confidence and independence while they are encouraged to explore and realize their personal potential.

As of January 3, 2023, all preschool classrooms will be located at the Blanche Ames School. Our highly qualified staff work collaboratively to prepare our students for success in kindergarten.

Each classroom

Each class maintains a low student-to-staff ratio, with a licensed teacher and paraprofessional support. The preschool staff also includes a speech and language pathologist (SLP), occupational therapist (OT), physical therapist (PT), school adjustment counselor, school psychologist, and a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA).

Each classroom:

  • Provides developmentally appropriate activities that are incorporated into a thematic curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts Common Core Learning Standards to prepare students for success in kindergarten.
  • Is led by highly-qualified, licensed early childhood/special educators with multiple years of experience.
  • Is supported by ongoing professional collaboration between preschool and kindergarten teachers.
  • Includes up to three professionals: one lead teacher and one to two paraprofessionals. This leads to a low student-to-teacher ratio.
  • Is supported by services from a Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Registered Nurse, School Psychologist, and Physical Therapist working as an interdisciplinary team. This preschool also consults/provides ABA services for those children who require them.
  • Is designed to encourage the students’ natural, inquisitive, and active participation in their own learning.
  • Provides a consistent structure and routine, including activities designed to promote growth in language and listening skills, fine and gross motor development, opportunities for imaginative play, sensory activities, and music. A wide variety of developmentally appropriate learning materials and activities are used, all of which support a strong foundation for learning.

Typical School Day

A typical day at the EPS Preschool includes small and large group instruction that balances active and quiet activities.  Children work and play in small groups.  The routine for the day includes the following:

Arrival Period
This begins at the front door, where the children start their day after they are dropped off for school, and ends with finding their name marker on their circle time mat to begin.

Circle Time
Group lessons take place that revolves around the classroom theme.  The circle lesson may be taught by the Teacher or by a specialist, such as the Speech/Language Pathologist.

Center Time
After Circle Time, the children select an activity to go to, by using our Center/Choice board.  The centers vary each day but do include all developmental areas, such as dramatic play, sensory play, art activity, fine motor activity, gross motor activity, and a teacher-directed lesson.  The teacher-directed lesson will vary from day to day but might be:  cooking, sequencing, patterning, fine/gross motor activities, or language activities.  The children are encouraged to independently try a variety of center activities every day.

Cleanup/Closing Circle Time
After the children have participated in our clean-up, they gather on the rug for another short circle.  At this time, follow-up activities such as calendar/weather, Letter of the Week, group games/songs, or sharing may take place.

Snacktime
All children wash their hands before they eat a snack. Children are encouraged to be as independent as possible and unpack and pack their snacks and backpacks.

Playground/Motor Play/Dismissal
We try to end our day with some time on the playground (weather permitting).  The school gym is available on certain days, or we try to have the children participate in a movement activity within the classroom.
