EASTON — Superintendent Lisha Cabral and Oliver Ames High School Principal Kelly Cavanaugh are pleased to share that three Oliver Ames students have received National African American Recognition Awards (NAARA) from the College Board.
Seniors Angelique Alphonse, Annabel Juste and junior Sonia Warrick were commended with the prestigious award. The College Board National Recognition Program awards the academic honor to sophomores and juniors who take eligible administrations of AP®, PSAT/NMSQT®, or PSAT™ 10 exams, and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
“Congratulations to Angelique, Annabel and Sonia,” said Principal Cavanaugh. “All three students have shown tremendous dedication and academic excellence in their years at Oliver Ames. They have proven to be leaders both inside and outside of the classroom and I look forward to seeing the amazing things they will do in the future.”
Angelique Alphonse
Alphonse is a four-year member of the Chamber Orchestra serving as the 1st Leader and Concertmaster, playing the violin. She is an elected member of the Student Council and is a student representative for the Superintendent Advisory Committee. Alphonse participates in the School on Wheels program and the Science Olympiad. She also volunteers for the annual elementary school STEAM Night.
Outside of school, Alphonse volunteers at the Easton Food Pantry and Keep Easton Beautiful Organization. She participates in readings during Mass on Sundays at her church. Alphonse has been invited to perform at the Easton Country Club as part of a quartet on several different occasions. On top of her activities outside of school, Alphonse works part-time as a lifeguard at the YMCA.
Alphonse is the vice president of the National Honor Society and is the recipient of the Elmira College Key Award and Gold Medal Award from the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association. She also participates in the Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters Association district music festivals. After graduation, Alphonse plans to study astronomy and astrophysics.
Annabel Juste
Juste is an AP Scholar with distinction. She is president of the School on Wheels program, treasurer of the Make-a-Wish program and a member of the Student Advisory Committee. In addition to her academic activities, she’s a member of the OAHS field hockey team and also plays for a club field hockey team.
Juste was accepted into the Boston Medical Center student program, where she had the opportunity to shadow doctors and gain clinical skillexperience. She also participated in the Duke University School of Medicine summer program.
She volunteers weekly serving as a Sunday School teacher at her church. Juste also holds a part-time job as a sales associate at TJ Maxx. After graduation, Juste plans to study biomedical sciences.
Sonia Warrick
Warrick is a member of the Oliver Ames Handbook Committee which reviews and amends school-related policies, and is a member of the school’s Student Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council where she is working on a DEI presentation for the school titled “Beyond the Stereotype.” She is a three-year member of the American Sign Language Club and has interpreted the National Anthem at Senior Class Night and graduation for the past two years.
In addition to her academic activities, Warrick volunteers at the Kumon Math and Reading Center in Mansfield. She was the 2021 ambassador for Easton for Project 351, an organization that supports youth-led service within the 351 towns and cities within Massachusetts.
