Easton’s Oliver Ames Receives $1 Million Endowment to be Used for Student Scholarships for Future Nurses, Teachers

EASTON — Superintendent Lisha Cabral is pleased to share that a graduate of Oliver Ames High School has endowed a new scholarship fund in the amount of $1 million.

The endowment will be held by the Town of Easton, in an account invested in an S&P 500 stock index fund managed by The Vanguard Group, one of the world’s largest fund managers.

A minimum of four scholarships will be awarded each year to graduating seniors. Each scholarship will be a minimum of $5,000, and could be higher, depending on the endowment’s earnings.

Two scholarships will be awarded to seniors pursuing a career in nursing and two scholarships will be awarded to seniors pursuing a career in teaching at the K-12 level.

“At my graduation, I was awarded scholarships totaling about $500, and what I’m doing now is ‘paying it forward’ to a new generation of OA graduates. I have fond memories of my OA teachers, especially Miss Foster, Miss Healey, and teacher/coaches Muscato and Nixon,” said the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous. “I have been blessed with good health, but some family members and friends were not as fortunate. While I was always impressed with the skill and knowledge of their doctors, what I remember more clearly was the personal care and compassion exhibited by their nurses. That’s why this scholarship fund is being dedicated to future teachers and nurses.”

Scholarship recipients will be chosen by the OAHS Scholarship Selection Committee. Financial need will be a major consideration in selecting recipients, and as much consideration as is given to academic achievements will also be given to the student’s character.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude not only for this generous endowment, but for the acknowledgement of the impact teachers and nurses have on us as individuals and on our community as a whole,” said Oliver Ames Principal Kelly Cavanaugh. “These scholarships will undoubtedly provide students with the financial support needed to pursue their passions in these fields. Thank you again to the generous donor.”
